Huntsman's Dutch MDI back on line at reduced rates, FM remains

US-based Huntsman’s methyl di-p-phenylene isocyanate (MDI) operations at Rozenburg, Netherlands are running again, but at reduced rates as a result of ongoing upstream and downstream constraints, and a force majeure remaining in place on certain MDI grades, a company source said on Wednesday.

Huntsman’s MDI facilities had been offline since the second half of March for scheduled maintenance, which was due to last for around four weeks.

However, the restart had been delayed because of upstream and downstream limitations from third party suppliers, which resulted in Huntsman’s force majeure declaration on pure MDI and MDI based variants out of its Rozenburg site last week.

The company source said “it is working hard with the third parties (involved) to resolve the issues as soon as possible. If the third party situation continues to improve, it expects MDI ops to be running normally in 2-3 weeks time.”

Precise details on the possible duration for the force majeure have not yet been specified, and will depend on how operations through its MDI value chain run and how long it takes to work through the backlog of  MDI orders.

The overall nameplate capacity of Huntsman's MDI operations at the site is 400,000 tonnes/year.
