A low VOC waterborne polyurethane coating from Covestro was a key element in the success of the recent renovation of Pittsburgh’s Energy Innovation Center.

The 80-year-old concrete floor of the newly retrofitted building was protected and given a ‘neo-industrial’ look using the coating. The two-component polyurethane topcoat that was used at the venue was Sherwin Williams GP4409 WB Polyurethane Satin, Covestro said.

It was a particular challenge achieving the desired look and specifications across 20,000 sq ft of damaged concrete floor, Covestro added.

The product used in the renovation has a solvent level below 50g/litre of co-solvent. This low VOC content greatly assisted in the building’s push to achieve LEED Platinum certification.
