Isocyanate Used in Track Adhesives: Knowing What It Is

The ‘poisonous track’ event makes track materials a hot topic. It’s known to all that the poisonousness is caused by materials and the suspected toxic ingredients among various kinds of feedstock are TDI, toluene, xylene, lead salt, etc.

As shown in the graph, though TDI just serves as the “feedstock’ for track adhesives, the trend of replacing MDI for TDI is inevitable due to new provincial standards of plastic tracks. According to the market feedback, it is more likely to use MDI in the future. Opinions of national standard are being asked for everywhere at present, while it is specified in an exposure draft issued in early November that harmful substances should be limited in synthetic material surfaces. The 6 kinds of harmful substances are as follows: 1. Soluble heavy metals (lead, cadmium, chromium, mercury) 2. Phthalate easter 3. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons 4. Short-chain chlorinated paraffins 5. MOCA 6. Isocyanate compounds

According to statistics data offered by Orisage Consulting, the domestic TDI consumption of 2017 is about 700,000 tons, among which 3% (around 20,000 tons) is used in sports & leisure industry, lower than the growth rate of last year. Please refer to the graph below:

MDI50 serves as the major substitution for TDI in this aspect. MDI50 can react chemically with polyol to create MDI prepolymer. According to Orisage Consulting, the consumption of MDI50 in 2017 is expected to be around 50,000-70,000 tons, mainly dominated by the consumption of downstream plastic tracks, coatings, adhesives and elastomers.

In MDI prepolymer market, the increase in the capacity of Wanhua Zhuhai and other MDI enterprises enables supply side to improve steadily, while there remains large room to advance in track adhesive market.

As shown in the graph, poisonous tracks still exist. The overall market will get sounder after the introduction of the national standard. With the open of the two-child policy, the shortage of kindergartens still could reach over 80,000 in the future and thus the country’s demand on new tracks will be close to 100,000 with a refurbishment every 3-5 years. Correspondingly, the consumption of feedstock MDI prepolymer will be immeasurable.
