GNFC Shuts Dahej TDI-II Facility Due to Leak

PUWORLD--A gas leak at Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers & Chemicals Limited (GNFC) has shut its TDI – II plant at Dahej indefinitely.

The leak occurred on the morning of January 15, 2018. No one was injured. No further details of the latest leak at the site were available.

This is the second leak at the plant in 27 months. In November 2016, a mechanical failure led to leakage of phosgene gas. That killed six and forced the plant to close for three months. Commercial production resumed in February 2017

A Bombay Stock Exchange filing on 16 January said, the plant will be reopened when it is safe.

The plant started commercial production in March 2014, and GNFC claims to be the only TDI producer in South Asia. Dahej has 50 kT/year capacity, according to the firm.

India Infoline Financial Services, a local consultancy, suggests that actual capacity could be closer to 33.4 kT/year, or 67% of the maximum. The group said this because of problems with operational stability.

GNFC traditionally exports TDI to the Middle East and Africa. It claims that in recent years its share of the local Indian market has grown from 44% to 67%.
