Ascend Plans 200,000-metric Ton and Expansion

PUWORLD--Ascend Performance Materials (Houston, Texas) says it will increase its capacity to produce adiponitrile (ADN), the precursor for hexamethylene diamine (HMDA), by another 220,000 metric tons/year through 2022. Once the project has been completed, Ascend will be able to produce 725,000 metric tons/year of ADN at its facility in Decatur, Alabama, according to data from IHS Markit. Cost estimates were not released.

Ascend, which completed a 50,000-metric tons ADN expansion last year, currently has production capacity totaling 505,000 metric tons/year. The company plans to add another 40,000 metric tons this year, with the remaining 180,000 metric tons to follow.

We have a proven track record of consistently increasing capacity throughout the chain as demand increased,” says Phil McDivitt, president and CEO. “With our latest fifth-generation ADN technology, we are able to add capacity without extensive down time.” Ascend’s ADN capacity totaled 310,000 metric tons/year when the company was acquired by SK Capital in 2009.

The news comes only weeks after Invista (Wichita, Kansas) announced a $250 million project to upgrade and increase ADN production capacity at its Victoria, Texas, facility, currently 403,000 metric tons, according to data from IHS Markit. Invista also has 380,000 metric tons/year of ADN capacity at Orange, Texas; Butachimie, its joint venture with Solvay, has 520,000 metric tons/year of capacity in Chalampe, France. There is only one other producer of ADN: Asahi Kasei, which has a 43,000 metric tons/year plant in Japan.
